Where Is My Love?

The song "Where Is The Love?" by the Black Eyed Peas, is directly related to the book "To Kill a Mockingbird", in which Jem and Scout are asking at the end of the trial, where is the love for Tom Robinson and the African American community.

"Father, Father, Father help us
Send some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love (Love)"

This is right after the trial when they have lost all trust in the community and they thought that they would do the right thing and say Tom was innocent. But the community is racist and they do convict Tom, which upsets the kids greatly. This leads the kid to look up to their father though cause he had tried to make things right, with him defending Tom. At the end of the trial the black community had even given him a hand of the good work that he had done for the community.

"I feel the weight of the world on my shoulder
As I'm gettin' older, y'all, people gets colder"

This is very similar to Jem and how he is growing up to be more and more like gentleman. He is starting to notice how the world really is and since Scout hangs out with him she is seeing the same stuff. They are seeing that the country doesn't think about race, and that they only care about their own race generating hate.

  1. Very good connection Randy. I thought about choosing this song because it really demonstartes how no one is together and loving in the book. Whites hate the blacks, while the town hates Atticus. It is sad and really makes me ask the question,"where is the love?"

  2. I love this song! You did a really good job with the connection. This song really connects to the theme of To Kill a Mockingbird and what the finches were feeling about there community, especially after the case that really opened there eyes to show them that the people in there communities aren't changing there views or races but instead racism is even slipping in, in the legal system.

  3. This was a very good response and you explained it well. I totally forgot about this song and how you were able to explain it with after the trial and it all fits together. I used the song Blame it by Jamie Foxx.

  4. Randy, I was intrigued with your musical connection to To Kill A Mockingbird. I thought that you tied in the Black Eyed Pea's "Where is the Love" very well with Harper Lee's novel. "Father, father, father help us" connects very well to Jem and Scout, who do need "some guidance from above".

  5. I like your connection to Where is the Love by the Black Eyed Peas. I liked how you used multiple examples of how this is displayed in the book. When Jem started acting like a man, you knew that there would be a moment where he would have to prove it.

  6. Well written Randy. I really liked your connection with the song and the book. Most people are relating their songs to the Tom Robinson case. You really thought about it and related it to the children and Atticus. I enjoyed reading your blog and I want you to keep up the good work.
