The Amazing Woman of the South

Born on April 28, 1926 in Alabama and she was the youngest of four children and she grew up being a tomboy. When she was growing up her father was not around that much because he was a lawyer and a member of the Alabama state legislature. Also her mom had a mental illness and she was thought to be bipolar, which made Lee’s childhood very hard. When she was in high school she started to get interested in english and after leaving high school she went to Huntingdon College in Montgomery. She had ended up transferring to the University of Alabama, and she was known an being a loner and being very to herself. When she was a junior she entered the law school at Alabama, but she had started to see that she really wanted to be a writer. In 1956, friends of hers told her that they would support her for a year, so she could dedicate her time to writing, and she got an agent. She then wrote her one and only book To Kill a Mockingbird. A couple years later, they had made a movie from the book To Kill a Mockingbird, and she had supported the film completely. She ended winning a Pulitzer Prize winner from her book To Kill A Mocking Bird and attempted to start other novels/books but she never published any more books.

  1. I found it very interesting that she was a tomboy after all of my research I failed to see that. I also did not see that her friends supported her for a year while she focused on her writeing. Good finds I am looking forward to the next report

  3. I knew her father was lawyer but I did not know her mother was mentally sick and diagnosed with possible bipolar disease. You were right about her trying to start another novel, in fact it was going to be a nonfiction but nothing else was mentioned. Next time you make another post go in depth with what happened to her after she stopped publishing any more books. Also, did you know, that she met president George W. Bush and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom!

  4. Randy your blog was very informative, and it allowed me to learn and confirm information that was on my blog as well. That was very interesting Randall but were you also aware of the fact that Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird was an International Best Seller? Good job pulling out interesting facts and important facts.

  5. In my research, i also found that Harper Lee was known to be a tomboy and socially awkward. I also discovered her mom suspected to be suffering from bipolar disorder. I thought this could have been a reason for her loner behavior. I didn't know she supported the creation of a movie because some authors are uncomfortable with this.

  6. Randy, I enjoyed this enlightening biography as well as title. I think after reading all about her life that her parents lives had a big effect on the way she turned out to be. She was isolated like her father was like for the family. She went a little crazy like her mom did. Its weird how she was so much like them and never really spent a lot of time around them. If only she hadn't gone crazy, we might be reading more phenomenal books by her.

  7. Randy, GREAT Blog! The first thing I thought was cool was your title "The Amazing Woman of the South". Your Blog was very informative. We both have a lot of information that was the same, but also some different. I like how you explain that her mother mental illness made Harper Lee childhood very hard. I also like how you told about her making a movie for the book which she completely support and tried to publish another novel but it was never successful.

  8. I thought that the most important part about Harper Lee's life was the fact that she was a tomboy. This affected her because it caused Lee to become a loner or oddball, which is unfortunately a common theme among successful writers. However, her childhood most likely directly influenced TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD.
